"Black Journalists Who Cover the White House"

A&T on C-SPAN

DeWayne Wickham and the Institute for Advanced Journalism Studies (IAJS) at N.C. A&T appeared on C-SPAN. The symposium, “Black Journalists Who Cover the White House,” aired August 21. The segment was filmed by C-SPAN during the Institute’s successful conference held in March on A&T’s campus.

A&T journalism students listened to the exciting experiences of black journalists who cover the White House. The moderator was Arthur Fennell, managing editor and anchor of CN8/Comcast. Panelists included April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks, Sonya Ross of the Associated Press, Kevin Merida of The Washington Post and William Douglas of Knight-Ridder Newspapers.

Wickham is distinguished professor of journalism and mass communications and executive director of the IAJS. He is also columnist for USA Today and the Gannett News Service.

U.S. Air Force Partnership

N.C. A&T entered into an educational partnership agreement (EPA) with the United States Air Force Research Laboratory Materials and Manufacturing Directorate (AFRL/ML) to engage in research of mutual interest. The Aug. 19 partnership was signed by Dr. Charles Browning, Director of the Materials Directorate and A&T Chancellor James C. Renick. Although the two entities have worked together over decades, the partnership will allow collaboration among air force personnel and A&T faculty.

Said Dr. Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development N. Radhakrishnan, said: “This joint venture is an excellent opportunity for A&T’s researchers to form more significant partnerships. Several of our faculty members are already involved in research activity with the Air Force. This agreement provides even more incentive for collaboration.”

Attention!
Administrators, Faculty and Staff

We are now recruiting students for participation in the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. The Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare and encourage academically talented students who are under-represented in graduate education to consider careers in college teaching and to prepare them for graduate study that leads to a doctorate degree. Named for the North Carolina A&T State University magna cum laude graduate Ronald E. McNair, the program at NC A&T was funded in 1990 as a multi-disciplinary comprehensive academic support program consisting of an Academic Year Component and a Summer Research Component.

To ensure continued academic success, McNair scholars participate in four program components:

Skill Building Seminars
A Research Methodology Course
A Summer Research Institute
Graduate School Preparation

Please refer any academically talented students to the program that you feel would benefit from this experience. All students referred must be currently classified as sophomores or above to be considered.

For more information, please contact the McNair Office at 334-7109 or 256-0208. You may also visit our website @www.ncat.edu/~remcnair

E-letter Feedback

Oh I was so surprised to read that Dr. James Williams had retired now. He was one of my instructors in physiology in the 1960s. The biology classes were held in Noble Hall on the third floor and the nursing department was on second floor. There was a histology lab in the basement and Dr. Alfreda Webb was the instructor. Old Noble Hall holds many memories for me as a biology student and Dr. Williams is part of those memories along with others i.e. Dr. Hill, Dr. Graves, chairmen; Mr. Mitchum, Dr. White, Ms. Collins, Mr. Cunningham. Congratulations to Dr. Williams (45 years).”
